Acupuncture can help regulate the menstrual cycle and encourage ovulation whether you are trying to conceive on your own, or are taking medications like Clomid. I like to see my fertility patients at least twice a month, and up to twice per week. One of those times being just prior to when you should be ovulating. Every patient is different, and I treat based on pattern differentiation. I may recommend taking one or more Chinese herbal formulas either to help with becoming pregnant or preventing miscarriage once you become pregnant (if you have a prior history of miscarriage).
Research has shown that acupuncture before and after IVF transfer results in higher pregnancy rates. It is not known exactly why acupuncture has this effect, but certain factors such as increased blood flow to the uterus and providing calming to the patient are certainly present. Acupuncture in the weeks or month prior to the IVF cycle may lead to increased uterine lining (endometrium), as well as the presence of increased or more mature follicles.
IVF Protocol: I recommend getting acupuncture treatments once or twice weekly (up to 8-9 treatments) leading up to the IVF cycle. On the day of the transfer, if possible, I recommend (in following with the research) treatment before and after the transfer. It is always the patient's decision to determine the frequency of the visits, but weekly treatments are recommended after the transfer until fetal heartbeat is detected (usually sometime between pregnancy weeks 5-8). If you have a previous history of miscarriage you may want to consider acupuncture treatments throughout the course of your pregnancy.
